Regardless of the learning context or individual challenges, fostering engagement is crucial for all students.
Simone is deeply passionate about supporting children with complex trauma and has
completed her doctorate research investigating the barriers and enablers for mainstream classroom teachers to
engage with professional development and trauma informed classroom pedagogy. She has had a varied career
working with children and young people in school, residential facilities, complex care settings and out-of-home care
with foster and kinship carers. Simone has worked as a team leader, program coordinator, and program manager in
child protection and currently runs her own consultancy business supporting children with complex trauma, their
families, and communities.

Teachers are working with children each day who have experienced multi-layered complex and dynamic
childhood trauma, loss, and disrupted attachments. Relational and developmental trauma and toxic
stress impacts children’s bodies, brains, relationships, behaviours, cognitions, and emotions. This
presentation series relates to relational and developmental trauma and the impacts for teachers in the
classroom when trying to engage children with dysregulated behaviours. The goals for this series are to
better understand relational and developmental trauma, the impact of this in the classroom, and how
teachers can help students impacted by trauma to develop their resilience.
